Wooden's Great-Grandson Scores Last Basket At Old Pauley Pavilion

Feb 27, 2011 12:27 PM

John Wooden’s great-grandson, Tyler Trapani, scored the final men’s basket at old Pauley Pavillion.

Trapani, a walk-on sophomore guard, caught an air-ball and banked it in for the final points of UCLA's stunning 71-49 victory over 10th-ranked Arizona.

"I pray a lot. . . . To have Trapani make that last shot means so much to me, you have no idea," Howland said, pausing to control a sob. "You couldn't have written it any better."

Trapani had taken only two other shots in his entire UCLA career.

Arizona Completely Dominated By UCLA's Interior Offense

Feb 26, 2011 10:08 PM

UCLA defeated No. 10 Arizona by a convincing 71-49 margin on Saturday.

The Bruins scored 51 of their 71 points inside the paint.

“We need a few days to regroup,” UA coach Sean Miller said. “This trip (the fourth time Arizona was swept in L.A. in the last six years) taught us some lessons. … We played a team (UCLA) that is playing at a high level. We need to play at a high level.”

Arizona had no answers for UCLA’s frontcourt players Reeves Nelson, Tyler Honeycutt and Joshua Smith. The trio combined for 59 of UCLA’s points on 23-of-36 shooting from the field.

Smith, a freshman center, had 17 points, four rebounds, a career-high three assists, and one blocked shot. He shot 7-for-11 from the field.

Nelson, a sophomore power forward, finished with a career-high 25 points

UCLA Surveys Fans About Where To Play Games In 11-12

Feb 15, 2011 10:05 PM

With Pauley Pavilion undergoing renovations next season, UCLA has sent season-ticket holders and fans who have purchased tickets going back to 2007 a survey asking which venues they would like the Bruins to play home games at next season.

UCLA is considering dividing games among Staples Center, the Sports Arena, the Honda Center, Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario, RaboBank Arena in Bakersfield and Valley View Casino Center in San Diego.

"I think without question we're looking at the Bruin road show," said Mark Harlan, UCLA's senior associate athletic director for external relations.

Harlan said the university is looking into the possibility of busing students to games. The Forum is no longer an option because of renovations that will turn the facility into a concert hall.

Lavin Brings St. John's To UCLA

Feb 4, 2011 5:10 PM

Former UCLA coach Steve Lavin is bringing his new team, St. John's, to Los Angeles.

The Bruins fired Lavin after the 2003 season. He will return to the school for the first time as a visiting coach on Saturday in a nationally television game between the Bruins and Red Storm.

"As we get closer to taking that bus ride from our hotel, the surreal aspect will hit me," Lavin said upon arriving in L.A.

Lavin went 145-78 during seven years in Westwood and took the Bruins to the final 16 of the NCAA tournament five times in six years.

Howland's Coaching Could Be Hurting UCLA's Recruiting Efforts

Feb 2, 2011 3:27 AM

UCLA didn't offer scholarships to Derrick Williams and Kawhi Leonard, two sophomores from southern California who are projected first round picks in the 2011 NBA Draft.

"We did a poor job not evaluating them as well as we should have," Ben Howland said recently.

Kevin Love's father Stan spoke with the family of Kyle Wiltjer, who signed with Kentucky after being pursued by UCLA.

"I like Ben. It's UCLA," Stan Love said, speaking generally about his thoughts on the program. "But you do have to play modern basketball. We could have won the championship if he would have taken the reins off a little bit. Sometimes, you have to outscore the other team; you can't just 'D up' all the time."

"From my observation, UCLA is not held in as high esteem as it was three years ago," said Bob Gibbons, a North Carolina-based national recruiting expert. "For some reason, players are leaving the area and going east."

Howland Frustrated With UCLA's Defense

Feb 1, 2011 2:29 PM

Bruins coach Ben Howland wants to see UCLA improve their defense heading into the latter part of the season.

“Our defense in the second half was really porous,” Howland said following their recent 85-74 loss to Arizona. “They shot 60 percent from the field (in the second half) and you can't expect to win on the road when you allow that.”

Arizona's 52 percent shooting from the floor came in large part from fast break opportunities — UCLA's transition defense gave the Wildcats 14 fast-break points.

“Transition bothered us in both halves,” Howland said.
